Poland 0-1 Slovakia: Slovaks Brave Chorzow Snow To Reach 2010 World Cup

Slovakia ensured they finished top of World CupQualifying Group Three thanks to a hard fought win away to Poland, thus securing qualification for the world’s most prestigious tournament for the first time in their history.
Vladimir Weiss’ side knew going into the game that they would need to win to guarantee their place in South Africa as second placed Slovenia, who beat the Slovaks twice in qualifying, faced San Marino.
The Slovakians didn’t have to work very hard to get in front in the snowy conditions as the Poles gifted the visitors a goal after just three minutes with a Seweryn Gancarczyk own goal giving goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek no chance.
It was a lead Weiss’ side did not relinquish, guaranteein their place at the 2010 World Cup on an historic night for Slovakina football.
Despite securing the biggest victory of the group, a 10-0 win over San Marino in April, tonight’s result, the fifth defeat in qualifying for the home side,completes a poor campaign for Poland who finish second last in the group above minnows San Marino.
