Bayern Munich’s Mark van Bommel Returns To Match Action
Dutch midfielder Mark van Bommel successfully continued his comeback from injury on Tuesday night, when the Bayern Munich skipper participated for 60 minutes in his side’s 1-0 friendly loss against Jahn Regensburg.
The holding midfielder had been sidelined for two months due to a toe injury.
Although Bayern lost the specially arranged friendly away to the third tier outfit, both Van Bommel and Italian striker Luca Toni gained useful match practice as coach Louis van Gaal contemplates his options for the club’s forthcoming competitive fixtures.
“It was a good test for Mark and Luca, and we’re delighted both made it through the game without any physical problems,” director of sport Christian Nerlinger said to the club’s official website. “It’s never good to lose, but the result was secondary in this case.”
Bayern Munich lock horns with Freiburg on Saturday, and Van Gaal will probably be without attackers Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery and Ivica Olic due to injury, meaning that Toni could very well make his first Bundesliga appearance of the season.
