Uruguay-Argentina Derby Will Be A World Cup Final – Sergio Martinez
‘El Manteca’ claims that the derby will be the most important in recent history.
Former Uruguayan international, Sergio Martinez, believes the River Plate derby between Uruguay and Argentina will be a memorable match because so much is at stake.
While Uruguay need a victory to advance to the World Cup in South Africa next year, Argentina only need a point from the match.
“It will be different to all of the other derbies that have been played in the past. It is the first time that we have chances of qualifying directly [for the World Cup], without having to enter the playoff,” Martinez said.
Martinez, who starred with Argentine heavyweights Boca Juniors, believes the match can be compared to nothing less than the World Cup final.
“Right now, and because of how the qualifiers have gone, Uruguay arrive better, with high morale. Argentina haven’t been playing well. The fans will push their side a lot, they are very happy and we will experience a World Cup final.”
As Martinez explained, Uruguay are favoured to win the contest, not only because of their form coming into the game, but because of the support of almost 70,000 fans that will attend the match at the legendary Centenario stadium. Uruguayan fans are amongst the most passionate in the world, and Argentina will have to overcome the hostile conditions.
“I’m excited like everyone because the truth is we thought we were out, and now we have more chances of being in than out.”
Martinez fired in Uruguay’s winner in the penalty shootout as they beat then world champions Brazil in the final of the 1995 Copa America at the very own Centenario stadium.
