Italy Coach Marcello Lippi Offers Francesco Totti A Source Of Hope

Lippi & Squad After Totti’s hint that he would like to return to the national side, Azzurri coach Lippi has stated that fresh faces could be brought into the fold before the World Cup.

Italy coach Marcello Lippi will not give in to calls urging him to bring Francesco Totti back to the fray, but he has left the Roma man with a source of hope.

Earlier, Totti told La Gazzetta Dello Sport that he would welcome a return if he got the call. Lippi has now responded.

“Totti is a great player and a good person. I know that there will be a lot of torment for me from now until June,” Lippi told the press at Coverciano.

“I don’t want to mention any names, but I will make judgements for the group. I will not exclude anything, but there could be players who are not here that will be come June.

“Would Totti refuse my call? No player has ever refused playing for the national team when I have called them.”

Italy clash with Cyprus on Wednesday in the final World Cup qualifier. Lippi is expected to field an experimental XI as the Azzurri have already qualified for South Africa 2010.
