Marcello Lippi Must Think Of Italy’s Youth Rather Than Francesco Totti – Arrigo Sacchi

Lippiiii Italy coach Marcello Lippi has been criticised in some quarters for relying on the ‘old guard’ too much during the World Cup qualifiers, but the Azzurri have secured top spot in their group with a game to spare.

There have been calls for World Cup winner Francesco Totti to return to the national setup, and Arrigo Sacchi knows the dilemma that faces coach and player after he went through a similar situation with Franco Baresi.

“It was Totti who wanted to leave the national team, so it depends on him [if he wants to return],” Sacchi told La Repubblica.

“It was more or less the same thing with Franco Baresi – we gave him a call and he returned to the Azzurri side.”

Rather than recall Totti, however, Sacchi wants the national coach to place his trust in the likes of Davide Santon and build for Italy’s future.

“Rather than think of the older guys, Lippi should think of the youngsters and those who can provide more for the future of Italy.”

The Azzurri’s final World Cup qualifier is against Cyprus, in which Lippi is expected to rotate his squad to give some of the more inexperienced players a chance to make a claim for a regular starting berth.
