Malawi 1-1 Ivory Coast: Elephants Book 2010 World Cup Ticket

Drogba The Flames confound supporters and opponents when they netted before the Cote D’Ivoire regrouped to equalize four minutes later, allowing them to qualify for next year’s World Cup.

The Malawian national team, The Flames shocked the continental giants Cote D’Ivoire when defender Jacob Ngwira netted the match opener in the 63rd minute before lethal and prolific goal-scorer Didier Drogba confirmed his stature by equalizing four minutes later.

Cote D’Ivoire, who fielded a number of renowned stars found it hard to break the hard fighting Malawians playing before frenzied home fans.

Despite looking for an opener in the first half, the Elephants strikers were frustrated by the impressive Malawian back line which held tight to force the first half to end in a barren draw.

Cote D’Ivoire who had expected a walk in the park, like many other football fans across the world were stunned by the rock solid and impenetrable Malawian defence.

More shock followed when Ngwira netted the first goal to open the account of the match. The home fans happiness was short lived however, as just a few minutes later Drogba did what he does in every other match in the English Premier League when he scored the equalizer after.

The draw was just enough for Cote D’Ivoire to be the second African country to book a ticket to South Africa after Ghana booked theirs in last month’s qualifier matches.

Malawi also improved their chances of qualifying for the African Cup of Nations by moving third with four points, just behind Burkina Faso who have six and Guinea who are now last with three points.

Although one should keep in mind that the Guinea and Burkina Faso match tomorrow might change the group standings.
