Bayern’s Toni Eyes Return To Italy
Luca Toni has suggested he would like to return to Serie A to boost his chances of making Italy’s World Cup squad after getting limited playing time at Bayern Munich so far this season.
The forward has played just once for the Bayern’s first team this season — in a German Cup match — and said he was unhappy after coach Louis van Gaal gave him a couple of games in the reserves.
“It’s not such a good period at Bayern, let’s see what happens over the next few months. A return to Italy is my first choice,” the 32-year-old, who was part of Italy’s 2006 World Cup-winning squad, was quoted as saying by Italian media.
“Last year I could not give as much as I wanted (because of an Achilles injury).
“Now I’m in good shape and I want to take my chances to get into the national team. It’s the last World Cup I can play in. I won one as a protagonist and I’d like to try again.”
Toni scored 24 league goals in his first season in Germany to help Bayern win the 2008 Bundesliga title.
