Karim Benzema To Be Left Out Of France Starting XI Against Faroe Islands

Benzema & Anilka Andre-Pierre Gignac is set to be preferred to the Real Madrid striker for les Bleus’ forthcoming fixture.

France head coach Raymond Domenech is set to once again snub Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema from his starting XI to face the Faroe Islands in a World Cup qualifier on Saturday.

Although
France Football reports that les Bleus’ head coach will maintain a 4-4-2 system, the magazine states that Wednesday’s training session in Guingamp has revealed some clues as to what the starting unit will look like. Surprisingly, Benzema will be beaten to the punch by Andre-Pierre Gignac, who is expected to partner Nicolas Anelka in attack.

The Toulouse striker may have been preferred to Benzema in previous internationals, but he has been exclusively used as the ‘one’ in a 4-2-3-1 formation. In addition, Gignac has very little experience of playing in a forward pairing at club level in recent times.

Although doubts had previously been raised over the fitness of Thierry Henry, Domenech is set to try the Barcelona striker in a left-sided midfield role ahead of Florent Malouda.

With Franck Ribery, Yoann Gourcuff and Samir Nasri all injured, Lassana Diarra and Jeremy Toulalan are set to start in a defensively-minded midfield duo.

The only other eyebrow-raising manoeuvre set to be performed by Domenech is to partner Eric Abidal at the heart of the defence alongside William Gallas.
