Adrian Mutu €17m Fine Temporarily Put On Hold

adrian-mutu_1-thumb-250-0-18Fiorentina’s Adrian Mutu is the beneficiary of some sensational news from Romania, where the country’s press is reporting that the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to fine him €17 million has been put on hold.

Mutu’s agent, Victor Becali, told sport.ro that more news would be forthcoming on Tuesday as there were few details currently available

However, he was delighted to say that “this is a temporary suspension of the decision, taken by the Swiss federal court”.

The decision is now effectively annulled while the Swiss courts review the entire situation surrounding the Romanian star.

Mutu was sacked by Chelsea in 2004 after he tested positive for cocaine. CAS ruled that this was a breach of contract, for which the fine was an incredible €17m (£14.6m).

The 30-year-old labelled the fine as a “great injustice”, but will be ecstatic on hearing the news that the decision to essentially bankrupt him has been – for now, at least – overturned.
