Souleymane Diawara: Marseille Will Qualify For Champions League Last 16
Commanding Olympique de Marseille centre-back Souleymane Diawara did not enjoy a good evening on Saturday when his side dropped to a 3-2 defeat against Valenciennes, but he remains remarkably upbeat about their chances prior to Wednesday night’s Champions League match against Real Madrid.
Indeed, the Senegalese defender believes that los Blancos’ plethora of offensive stars will have a hard job scoring against OM, indicating that he believes the French giants can still qualify for the knock-out stages of the competition, despite losing 2-1 at home to Milan in their opening game.
“I have not come to exchange my jersey or take pictures of the stadium,” he indicated
Somewhat inevitably, the discussion turned towards Real’s Karim Benzema, a player who shone for Olympique Lyonnais in Ligue 1 and a young man who boasts an incredible scoring record at Champions League level.
“He’s a great player, but he’s not impressed me in [individual] duels,” Diawara dismissed.
“With ‘Gaby’ [Gabriel Heinze], we will ensure that the attacker does not take pleasure and has a bad night.
“Since I’ve been small, it’s always been my dream to play in the Champions League. And win!”
Diawara did accept that such a dream is likely to be a step too far this season, though he asserted that OM will “qualify for the knock-out stage”.
Marseille surely need to get at least a point on Wednesday evening to keep their dreams alive, though it will be difficult as Real Madrid still boast a 100 per cent record in competitive football this season.
