Debrecen 0-4 Olympique Lyonnais: French Giants Trample Gentle Hosts

Lyon made easy meat of their opponents in Hungary.

An early Kim Kallstrom strike paved the way for a 4-0 success for Olympique Lyonnais over Debrecen, with the other goals coming from Miralem Pjanic, Sidney Govouand Bafetimbi Gomis.

The visitors started brightly and demonstrated their attacking intent on three minutes, when a corner from the left was directed to the top of the box, whereKallstrom struck home a first-time volley with his left foot.

Lyon would double their lead on 12 minutes, after Govou was fouled 25 yards from goal.
Pjanic‘s free kick went over the wall and into the top right hand corner of the net, with Poleksic clearly at fault.

Despite the 2-0 result, chances were anything but abundant, as Lyon had only been able to score in set-piece situations. And the French giants would add a third on 24 minutes through
Govou, who headed home following a corner from the left aimed at the near post.

Debrecen were finding it extremely hard to do anything in Lyon’s side of the field, and their occasional glimpses of attacking play kept finding Lloris in the way of the goal.

Govou almost scored his second of the night two minutes before the break, when he moved past two players before blasting at goal, but Poleksic made a good save.

Lyon came out the stronger side after the break and imposed themselves in the 51st minute through
Gomis, following a high pass from Kallstrom. The Debrecen keeper scampered off his line, but Gomis headed the ball past him before slotting into the net.

Rudolf, who had been brought on at half-time, then had two chances on goal in the space of a few minutes. He unleashed shot from distance that forced Lloris to tip the ball over the bar, and from the resulting corner, he hit the post with a close-range effort.

Makoun wasted a clear-cut chance to net his side’s fifth goal 66 minutes into the game, when he headed wide from ten yards out with no opposition following a Kallstrom corner.

There was still sign of danger from the hosts as on 87 minutes Czvitkovics’ shot from long range forced Lloris to parry the ball away.

Lyon showed they still had something to say, and Ederson wasted another chance for the visitors two minutes from stoppage time, when his header went flying over the bar.
