Roma Defender Nicolas Burdisso Wary Of Basel Threat

Burdissoo2 Roma begin their Europa League campaign tonight when they visit Swiss outfit Basel and on-loan central defender Nicolas Burdisso insists the new look competition deserves as much respect as the Champions League he had become accustomed to playing in while at Inter.

“It certainly has a different importance, but the motivations remain the same because when you step on to the pitch you want to win,” the 28-year-old admitted to the Corriere dello Sport.

“I haven’t played regularly at Inter over the past few years, but I am doing so at Roma and this helps me reach top form.

“It won’t be an easy game against Basel, all opponents deserve respect and so does this new European cup that we want to honour.”

Roma got off the mark in Serie A last weekend with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Siena, following two defeats in their opening two games of the season.

“Our objective is to take one game at a time,” said Burdisso.

“We want to follow up the victory over Siena with a positive result and winning here would mean taking an important step towards qualification from this group.”
