Olympique Lyonnais 1-0 Fiorentina: Hosts See Off Ten-Men Viola With Pjanic Goal

The home side were made to sweat to get anything out of the match.

The match started at a slow pace, with the first chance on goal coming on 11 minutes, when Adrian Mutu was played through but the striker, facing the opposition of one Lyon defender, could not direct his effort goalwards.

In the 24th minute, Fiorentina had another chance to score, but when Gilardino was getting ready to apply the finishing touch, Toulalan denied the Italy international with a slidding tackle.

The hosts were at this time unable to do create danger and made use of some wide of the mark challenges to stop their opponents, which made the referee show two yellow cards in the space of minutes.

Lyon thought they had scored in the 45th minute, when Cissokho’s cross from the left rolled onto the cross bar and spilled to a team-mate, who sent it home from close range, but the referee decided the cross had curled out of play.

The Viola were reduced to ten men in added time as Gilardino caught Toulalan in the face with his elbow and was shown a straight red card for the challenge.

Now with ten men, Fiorentina looked to camp out in their own half to deny Lyon’s attacking threat and the French giants kept piling the pressure. On 67 minutes, Lisandro went close to scoring, when Gamberini took too much time to react to a bouncing ball and the striker almost got to it but the Italian defender denied his effort.

Just two minutes later, another chance by the home side as Govou fed the ball to Lisandro, and just before the striker could touch on the ball, Comotto appeared to clear the danger.

Lyon were clearly better now and their pressure finally bore fruits on 76 minutes, when Pjanic tapped the ball in from close range after it had rebounded to him following a shot from Kallstrom.

The French side could have doubled their lead 83 minutes into the game, but Frey’s world-class saves kept the scoreboard untouched, first denying Lisandro and then Govou.

In the 87th minute, Kallstrom had the last chance of the game as he went for glory from long range, only to find Frey in the way of the goal once again.
