Sir Alex Ferguson: Experience Will Aid Us

Sir Alex Ferguson feels United have the wherewithal to pass the first Champions League test of the 2009/10 season, even if Besiktas’ fans are just as fervent as those of previous Turkish opponents.

The English champions were infamously welcomed “to Hell” by Galatasaray supporters and away games against Fenerbahce have not been easy either; however, such encounters can only stand United in good stead, insists the manager.
“We’ve been here a few times before and it’s always an experience,” said Sir Alex at his pre-match press conference.

“We expect much of the same tomorrow (Tuesday) in terms of the atmosphere. I think the type of atmosphere you experience in Turkey is unique and incredible, it really shows the fanaticism of the supporters.

“I remember a previous trip to Istanbul when the home fans were in the stadium from midday, many hours before kick-off of course. That was amazing. It shows you the devotion they have for their football club.”

As for the opposition on the pitch, Sir Alex praised Besiktas for their attractive style.

“I watched Besiktas’ game against Galatasaray at the weekend, and although they lost 3-0, they are a team who try to play good football with short passes.

“They’ve got intelligent, skilful players but we’re prepared for that. Hopefully we can play our game and try to quell the atmosphere, we’ll use our experience to do that.”
