The 2009-10 Champions League group stage kicks off tonight with a host of top European sides hoping to wrestle the coveted trophy away from reigning champions Barcelona.

Among them are four Serie A entrants – Inter, Juventus, Milan and Fiorentina – and UEFA President Michel Platini thinks at least two of them have what it takes to go the distance.

“If I were in Barcelona’s shoes, I would touch wood…” the Frenchman told Turin daily La Stampa.

“Do you want to know why? Because since the European Champions’ Cup became the Champions League, it has not been won twice in a row by the same team. And we are talking about 17 tournaments, not just one.

“Juventus have reinforced their squad, and Inter as well. Milan, on the other hand, are struggling and Fiorentina are there in the fold.

“It won’t be easy to overthrow English and Spanish sides, but Inter and Juve strike me as well-equipped.”

Juventus and Milan begin their journey tonight, facing French representatives Bordeaux and Marseille respectively, while Inter welcome Barcelona to the San Siro tomorrow night, with Fiorentina travelling to Ligue 1 giants Lyon.
