Laurent Blanc: ‘Bordeaux Have Nothing To Lose’

SOCCER-FRANCELaurent Blanc, head coach of Girondins de Bordeaux, has recognised the strong start Juventus have made to their campaign and has installed his side as underdogs ahead of their Champions League meeting at the Stadio Olimpico on Tuesday evening.

Although he is not talking up his team’s chances of causing an upset, the World Cup winning centre-back is not dismissing his men either.

“We must first defend well as matches in the Champions League have many duels,” he proclaimed in a press conference.

“The team that wins will have most of the ball. And Juve and Bordeaux like to have the ball.

“But I’ll surprise you, we have nothing to lose – nobody believes we will win. We will try to defy the odds. It is Juve who have most to lose: they play against weaker opposition and they must take three points.

The Old Lady will be without key playmaker Diego for the encounter, but Blanc does not believe this will be an issue for Ciro Ferrara’s men.

“They have a very high level in all areas of play, so the collective value [of the team] will be the same,” he explained.

Blanc recalled last season’s opening Champions League fixture, noting that he hopes a repeat is avoided.

“Losing against Chelsea was no disgrace,” he said.

“But my team did not play and that was unpleasant.”

Despite being a little coy on les Girondins’ chances on Tuesday, Blanc maintains that he does have some hope for his side in the competition.

“Our goal is very high, pass the group stages and qualify for the knockout stages,” he asserted.

“It is an ambitious speech, especially that there are two favourite teams.”

Indeed, if Bordeaux are to achieve a knockout round berth, they will have to eliminate either Juve or Bayern Munich, two teams with high aspirations of their own.
