Emmanuel Adebayor has moved swiftly to apologise for the provocative celebrations which accompanied his goal against old club Arsenal this afternoon, telling Sky Sports that he is “sorry” for his actions.

Having nodded in the third goal during Manchester City’s 4-2 victory over the Gunners, Adebayor promptly ran the length of the pitch to savour his strike directly in front of the visiting supporters. The Arsenal fans were enraged and a plastic seat appeared to be thrown in the direction of the Togolese forward.

Referee Mark Clattenburg was similarly unimpressed and booked Adebayor. The £25 million man has moved swiftly to acknowledge that his behaviour was at fault – albeit also noting that he would take a character-forming lesson away from his gaffe.

“I’m sorry for what I have done,” said Adebayor.

“We have to do a mistake to be better tomorrow.”

It was an incident-strewn afternoon for Adebayor, with a challenge involving former teammate Robin van Persie leaving the Dutchman with a cut to the head. However while Adebayor expressed regret for the damage to van Persie’s cranium, he was adamant there was no malice involved in the incident.

“I don’t have time to take back my foot [but] I feel sorry for him.”

A happier subject for Adebayor was his new side’s victory over one of the Big Four sides in the Premier League, and he praised the determination displayed by the City team as they claimed a fourth straight league victory.

“We were fighting for that,” remarked Adebayor.

“We showed character, we showed personality [and] it is the three points which is important.”
