Yoann Gourcuff Is Like Zinedine Zidane – France Winger Franck Ribery

Although the young midfielder has not hit the heights internationally that he has with Bordeaux, the Bayern Munich ace has compared the youngster to one of the all time greats.

Franck Ribery has declared that playing with Yoann Gourcuff in the France international side gives him the same feeling that he enjoyed when he starred with Zinedine Zidane.

The Bayern Munich ace featured only on a handful of occasions on the international scene with ‘Zizou’, but they struck up a fine relationship, being the two guiding lights in France’s charge to the 2006 World Cup final, and the 25-year-old believes Gourcuff comes from the same school as Zidane, who, of course, also made his big breakthrough with Girondins de Bordeaux, where the Breton-born star currently plies his trade.

Ribery said that he gets “the same sensations” with Gourcuff “that I had when I played in the team with Zidane”.

The pair combined to excellent effect in the 2-2 draw against Romania a year ago, but have yet to really hit it off since. However, Ribery is confident that it is only a matter of time before they excel.

He explained to France Football, “We feel that everything will soon be okay between us. He has a sort of sixth sense, which gives rise to good relationships on the playing field.”

Both men are expected to start in Wednesday’s important match against Serbia – a game France must win to keep alive hopes of automatic qualification for the World Cup. Ribery is tipped to play on the right side of the attacking midfield sector, with Gourcuff in the centre of the same zone.

Nicolas Anelka will likely start at the point of the side, with Karim Benzema again reduced to starting from the bench.
