Ronaldo Fears World Cup Is Out Of Reach

Cristiano Ronaldo is on the brink of turning from World Cup winker to stinker.

Portugal needed a last-gasp leveller against Denmark – and FIFA World Player of the Year Ronaldo will now fear their South Africa 2010 campaign is about to collapse.

Denmark lead Group One and are seven points ahead of fourth-placed Portugal – who need to finish at least second to stand any hope of qualifying.

Ronaldo – who broke English hearts at the last World Cup and gave a wink after Wayne Rooney was harshly sent off for a tussle with Ricardo Carvalho – seemed close to tears at the end of the vital game in Copenhagen on Saturday night.

The Euro 2004 runners-up created 20 chances on goal against the Danes and boss Carlos Queiroz is hoping for a change of luck.

Queiroz said: “We have to raise our heads and keep believing. The game is not over and while it lasts we have to believe.

“Portugal played very well, the players were very focused. We progressed in the game, always in control, but, once again, the merit did not follow who played better.

“Only one team could have won. We were not good in finishing matters, with opportunities with an empty net where we could not score.”

Arsenal’s Nicklas Bendtner gave Denmark the lead before Brazilian-born sub Liedson scored a dramatic late equaliser on his international debut.

Portugal now have to beat Hungary home and away and Malta and then hope for favours elsewhere in the group to save their World Cup push.

But they were moaning after this match about a handball in the Danish area during the first half.

Queiroz complained: “This is one more penalty – like many others that were not signalled.”
