Diego Maradona Confirms Carlos Tevez Will Partner Lionel Messi In Attack Against Brazil

Tevez ‘El Pibe de Oro’ opted for the Manchester City ace.

After days of uncertainty, Diego Maradona finally announced Argentina’s starting XI to face arch-rivalsBrazil on Saturday, with Carlos Tevez partnering Lionel Messi up front.

There was much speculation that Boca Juniors veteran Martin Palermo could get the nod instead of Tevez, while Lisandro Lopez of Lyon, Sergio Aguero of Atletico Madrid and Ezequiel Lavezzi of Napoli were also alternatives.

The two-time world champions will turn out with the following starting XI against the Selecao:

Mariano Andujar, Javier Zanetti, Nicolas Otamendi, Sebastian Dominguez, Gabriel Heinze, Maximiliano Rodriguez, Javier Mascherano, Juan Sebastian Veron, Jesus Datolo, Lionel Messi and Carlos Tevez.

The names were not announced by Maradona, but by a journalist during the press conference in Ezeiza. All Maradona said was “yes, that is it.”

Maradona is very confident in his teams chances against Brazil, and he affirmed that they won’t “hide anything” but will attack the Brazilians with all their “might.”

“We have to go out to suffocate Brazil, to look for it [the result], to keep them in their goal, and to be careful of Kaka, Robinho, Luis Fabiano. For them not to break us on a counterattack, to be very careful of rebounds.”

Argentina will be forced to claim the three points, because anything less could put an end to their World Cup hopes.
