Zico Crowns Juventus Ace Diego

Brazilian trequartista Diego has taken Serie A by storm following his high-profile move to Juventus this summer, and several pundits in the peninsula have enthusiastically likened him to former Udinese star Zico, something that has pleased the Selecao legend.

“For the role he plays and the way he takes free kicks, it is true that we are a bit alike,” the 56-year-old confessed to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“His best quality? Intelligence, because he always knows where to put the ball, sees his team-mates and puts them through.

“As a result, he needs to play behind the forwards. And that is why it’s right to build the team around him – it can magnify his characteristics, because Diego is now one of the few players who can make a difference.”

After much consideration, Brazilian-born striker Amauri seems to have given his international future to his adoptive country, although it emerged yesterday that red tape could further delay his Italy debut.

“Amauri made his name in Italy and it’s only fair that he plays for Italy,” mused Zico, who is currently in charge of Russian club CSKA Moscow.

“That’s more useful to him and [the Italian people], and therefore I wish him the best of luck.”
