Manchester United Fail In Shock Bid For Stephen Ireland

Stephen Ireland2 Manchester United have reportedly failed in an audacious bid to bring Manchester City midfielder Stephen Ireland to Old Trafford.

According to the Sunday Mirror, the champions believed they could tempt City’s midfield maestro across the city due to the huge competition for places at Eastlands.

The Citizens have added Gareth Barry, Vincent Kompany and Nigel de Jong to the squad this year and have a surplus in talent of midfield.

However, despite all the star names arriving at the City of Manchester Stadium, Ireland remains a key player for the Sky Blues, and indeed was named the club’s player of the season last time out.

All of which, the report continues, attracted the Red Devils but they have been given short shrift by the neighbours who have told Sir Alex Ferguson’s side that Ireland is not for sale at any price.

The tabloid also quotes the midfielder as insisting he is perfectly happy at City and has no intention of leaving.

“I want to be part of what happens at City because I think we’re going to achieve great things,” he said.

“I want to be around when that happens. I don’t want to be anywhere else.

“I’ve been happy here since I came over from Ireland at the age of 14. From then, I set my sights on staying at Manchester City and that’s how I still feel.”

Next up for Ireland, and City, is a trip to Fratton Park to take on struggling Portsmouth.
