Bayern Munich Beat Juventus To Schalke’s Rafinha

5364728 Reports in Germany indicate that Bayern Munich have completed the signing of Schalke full-back Rafinha for a fee of €11m, beating Juventus to the Brazilian’s services.

Coach Christian Nerlinger would not confirm the transfer when asked to do so by German television, but sources such as Kicker state that Bayern effected the financial part of the transfer early on Saturday.

Curiously, the news broke as Rafinha took part in Schalke’s 1-0 defeat at home to Freiburg, with some of the Gelsenkirchen side’s fans booing the player – oblivious to the transfer development – for a perceived lack of loyalty.

Rafinha has long since been linked with a move away from the cash-strapped Miners, with Juventus being seen as likely suitors last week.

However, with Old Lady sporing director Alessio Secco stating that there was no move completed, the door was left open for Bayern to make their move.

Rafinha, 23, arrived at Schalke from Coritiba in 2005, fast becoming one of the Koenigsblauen side’s top performers.

However, his relationship with the Veltins-Arena management soured after he left without permission for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. He returned with a bronze medal with Brazil, but was also slapped with a €700,000 fine for being AWOL for over a month.

The transfer has not been officially confirmed, with Schalke coach Felix Magath stating that it is not yet concrete. However, German press sources state that it is only a matter of time.
