Maccabi Haifa 3-0 Red Bull Salzburg (5-1 agg): Home Win Spells Progress For Israelis

Not even former Bayern striker Alexander Zickler could salvage a win for the Austrians.

Maccabi Haifa disposed of their opponents in style tonight as they welcomed Red Bull Salzburg to Kiryat Eliezer and sent them home after putting three goals past them as part of tonight’s Champions League play-off action.

The Green Demons quickly took control of the match, testing Salzburg ‘keeper Edward Gustafsson mainly through Mohammad Ghadir’s right foot – the striker continuing to harass the Austrians at every opportunity.

Just as the game ticked over the 30 minute mark, the Israeli side’s persistence paid off. Vladimer Dvalishvili found enough space in his opponents’ box to finish with a powerful left-footed effort from close range and give the hosts a deserved lead.

Play started to break up as the match entered the dying stages of the first half, Salzburg in particular giving away several free kicks as they attempted to prevent the hosts from building on their first goal.

The second half began much the same as the first, Haifa again hogging most of the action. Huub Stevens opted to switch things up for the visitors on the 55 minute mark, throwing Alexander Zickler and Admir Vladvic into the fray as his side looked for an equaliser.

Not more than two minutes later, Eyal Golasa made it 2-0 for the home side. Golasa’s venomous strike from outside the box easily beat an outstretched Gustafsson, leaving Haifa manager Elisha Levy looking rather thrilled.

Despite being two goals behind, Salzburg just could not find their way towards Haifa’s net as the game drew to a close – the hosts continuing to pester Gustafsson until the game had almost come to an end.

However, the scoreline would change yet again, as Ghadir’s persistence finally paid off in the 90th minute. The 18-year-old found plenty of space at the back post and was able to side-foot his way to European glory.

  1. It was in Ramat Gan which is near Tel Aviv and not in Haifa since their staduim is not approve to these games .
