Joan Laporta Optimistic About Barcelona Signing Chygrynsky

laporta The Barca chief confirms his intent to bring in the Ukrainian defender.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has said he is “optimistic” about the possibility of signing Shakhtar Donetsk defender Dmytro Chygrynsky.

Laporta told Spanish television that talks were ongoing and stressed that the signing of Chygrynsky was not a “whim” on the part of coach Pep Guardiola.

“It is complicated. We’ve been asked for a lot [of money] but we continue to negotiate and in the end I think there will be a solution,” Laporta said.

“It is not a whim of the coach, we need to strengthen the squad.”

Laporta also defended director of football Txiki Begiristain and the signings he has made, most notably Brazilian duo Henrique and Keirrison, who have cost Barcelona in the region of €22 million and have not as yet kicked a ball for the Blaugrana.

Keirrison joined from Palmeiras earlier this year and has been loaned to Benfica while Henrique, who also signed from Palmeiras in 2008 and spent last season on loan at Bayer Leverkusen, is likely to be loaned out again this year.

“Henrique was one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga last season and Keirrison is wanted by half the teams in Europe,” said Laporta.
