Yoann Gourcuff Pleased By Bordeaux’s Perfect Start To Their Ligue 1 Season

Defending champions Girondins de Bordeaux have continued their remorseless winning form in Ligue 1, securing a 4-0 success over Nice on Sunday, which led Yoann Gourcuff to describe his side’s start to the season as “very good”.

Les Girondins are the only side to have won all of their opening three matches, and Gourcuff, who is currently Le Championnat’s top scorer with four goals, believes that there is better to come from Laurent Blanc’s side.

“It’s very interesting, it’s a very good start to the season, and more so because we know we are not yet at 100 per cent physically,” France Football quotes the former Milan midfielder as having stated after Sunday’s success, which was a result that somewhat flattered the home side.

“Sunday we had difficulty in playing our game. The ball carrier did not have many options. This may be related to the heat, which was not conducive to the way we play.”

Bordeaux face their sternest challenge of the season next week, when they travel to the south of France to face league favourites Olympique de Marseille at the Stade Velodrome. Despite the fixture being close to a week away, Gourcuff envisages a tough challenge.

“At the moment, they’ve made a good start to the championship,” he stated. “Marseille were already impressive last season, but they’re above that level now. Their last draw in Rennes is not a bad result for them because Rennes are a big team.

“It will be a complicated game, with both teams looking to play. It might be entertaining.”

Bordeaux lost their last match in the Velodrome 1-0, but that was back in February and they are currently on an incredible 16-match winning run in competitive fixtures.
