Nakamura Set For Espanyol Move

Having looked set to go back to Japan, it now appears that the midfielder has chosen to try his luck in la Primera.

Shunsuke Nakamura has chosen to sign for Espanyol after turning down a move to J-League side Yokohama Marinos, officials from the Japanese club have revealed.

The midfielder, who turns 31 next week, held negotiations with Marinos, but could not reach an agreement and has now opted to move to the Spanish league to play for the Blanc i Blau.

Nakamura left Celtic at the end of the season after four years with the Scottish giants because he wanted a fresh challenge and Espanyol have now won the race to sign him.

“Unfortunately, he has chosen to join Espanyol and not Marinos,” Yokohama president Masaharu Saito said.

Espanyol have agreed a deal that will see them pay Nakamura around €1.1 million-per-year as he joins the club on a free transfer and his arrival could see several players stay.

Ivan de la Pena is still said to be mooting a new contract at the club and Nakamura’s arrival to give the midfield more weight could see the former Barca and Lazio playmaker decide to remain.

After 12 years in the Estadi Olimpic on Montjuic, Espanyol will move into their new purpose-built stadium this summer.
